The Sandhill Laboratory

The Sandhill Laboratory was originally established to test samples of avian origin. We now also offer referral laboratory services to other veterinary practices and organisations covering many species.

The majority of testing for our Avian clients is done in our own laboratory, but some tests are undertaken for us by specialist laboratories throughout the United Kingdom.

Laboratory tests available include:
  • Worm egg counts on faeces and litter (VETQAS accredited for Avian and Ruminants)
  • Coccidial oocyst counts on faeces and litter
  • Grouse Trichostrongylus worm counts
  • Salmonella testing
  • Hygiene swab cultures
  • Drinking water cultures
  • Total Viable Counts (TVCs)
  • Bacterial and fungal cultures
  • Hatchery debris analysis
  • Serological testing of bloods
  • Post mortem examination of carcasse
  • AH&W Pathway Worming Treatment Check test in sheep
  • Milk / Mastitis culture and sensitivity
  • Fluke egg faecal counts

In overall charge of the laboratory testing are our Senior Laboratory Technicians, Cat Palmer and Andrew Double, with post mortem examinations being undertaken by the Veterinary Surgeons, Laura Langstaff and Dan King.
