Sandhill Veterinary Services

Sandhill Veterinary Services is a veterinary practice that provides care for game birds, commercial and domestic poultry and domestic pigeons.

The practice was established in March 1997 by veterinary surgeon, Mr. R.T. Byas B.Vet.Med., M.R.C.V.S. With over forty years of avian experience we have created facilities that are dedicated to avian work and are supported by our own laboratory.

We are aware of the special problems associated with the rearing and management of game birds, commercial poultry and domestic poultry together with the requirements of pigeon owners. We offer a comprehensive advisory service that includes site visits together with disease diagnosis and supply of medicines where appropriate.

If clients wish to consult the veterinary surgeon, they should contact the practice in advance to ensure that the veterinary surgeon will be available.

Richard qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London and began his professional career in York concentrating on working with farm livestock and poultry. Richard is proud to be a Yorkshireman by birth and has spent all his working life in the county. In 1996 he left the York practice and founded Sandhill Veterinary Services at Topcliffe near Thirsk to concentrate on avian work.

Richard has been a member of the Yorkshire Veterinary Society since starting in practice and served a term as president in the 1990's. He has been a member of the British Veterinary Poultry Association for over twenty five years.

Outside of the practice his interests include gardening and his livestock. He is a Lay Reader of the Church of England and is an active member of the local church in Topcliffe. He is also on the York Deanery Standing Committee.

Laura Langstaff BVetMed MRCVS

Laura qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2012 and initially worked in mixed practice in Hornsea and latterly in small animal practice in Middlesbrough. Laura is local, she grew up down the road in Sessay, and her interest in poultry started with her parents keeping a small flock of backyard chickens. Laura’s desire to pursue a career in avian work was fuelled further by broiler and poultry practice placements completed whilst at vet school.  She looks forward to playing an active role in all areas of avian veterinary care here at Sandhill.

Laura is currently undertaking the Poultry Health Course run by the University of Nottingham and is a member of the Young Poultry Vet Group, a branch of the British Veterinary Poultry Association.
In her spare time Laura enjoys walking, swimming and reading and looking after her cat, Peanut.

Janet Bullock

Janet originally joined the practice to work the summer months in 2013 and returned to work over the summer months in 2014. Her position as Office and Laboratory / PM room assistant was made permanent in October 2014.
